Join us in this episode as I sit down with my friend, mentor, and colleague Chieh Peng. Chieh is a living legend within the field of scientific ocean drilling, having worked aboard the Joides Resolution for 25+ years. As a laboratory officer for the IODP, Chieh shares her remarkable journey from Taipei to Texas, and unravels the mysteries of oceanographic drilling, and living at sea.

We discuss the role of technical staff aboard research vessels, and their responsibilities ranging from instrument engineering to carpentry to database management. Living aboard a ship for 60+ days consecutively, we speak on life aboard and how to navigate diverse personalities to overcoming conflicts. We shed light on the physical demands and logistical challenges of being a marine technician, and highlight the importance of stress management.
