From Receptionist to Dean: Dr. Reva Bond's Trailblazing Path in Construction

In this episode of the Smoko Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Reva Bond, the first female Dean of the School of Construction at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Dr. Bond shares her unconventional journey into the construction industry, starting from a receptionist role to leading one of Canada's premier construction education institutions.

Dr. Bond discusses how an unexpected opportunity in a construction company ignited her passion for the industry. Through curiosity, initiative, and mentorship, she navigated various roles, eventually doubling her income and breaking new ground for women in construction leadership.

Her academic pursuits led her to earn a doctorate in distance education, focusing on complexity leadership theory. Dr. Bond emphasizes the importance of embracing paradoxes and fostering inclusive environments to drive innovation and growth in traditionally male-dominated fields.

As an Executive Advisor for SAIT's Women in Trades and Technology (WITT) program, Dr. Bond advocates for increased female participation in trades and de-stigmatizing gender roles. She highlights the significance of mentorship, continuous learning, and creating supportive networks to empower the next generation of women in construction.

“Steel-toed boots and ambition doubled my income and opened doors I never saw coming.”
– Dr. Reva Bond
