Women in Wood: Lacey Rose & Jess Kaknevicius on Forestry & Community

Take a break, we’re on Smoko. This week, we’re joined by Lacey Rose and Jess Kaknevicius, founders of Women in Wood, a thriving network and advocacy community for women in the forestry sector.

Jess, now the CEO of Forests Canada, and Lacey, a registered professional forester managing Renfrew County Forests, share their experiences navigating careers in forestry, breaking down stereotypes, and shaping policy and practice that reflects sustainability and equity.

“The power of this group is in its authenticity—no judgment, no barriers. Just people sharing, learning, and growing together.” – Women in Wood

We explore the founding of Women in Wood—from its origins as a small Facebook group to a global community empowering women in forestry through connection, mentorship, and collective growth. Jess and Lacey speak openly about the emotional journey of being women in a male-dominated industry, and how community has helped them and others thrive.

This episode also tackles some of the biggest misconceptions about forestry and climate work, including the vital role that sustainable forest management plays in carbon storage, ecosystem health, and resilience.
