Sophia Malbarosa (Pia Builds): From Dance to Carpentry & Inclusive Education

Take a break, we’re on Smoko. This week, we sit down with Sophia Malbarosa, also known as Pia Builds, a multidisciplinary artist turned carpenter, professor, and advocate for representation in the trades.

Pia’s journey began in the world of ballet, but after injuries redirected her path, she discovered carpentry and set design—finding a new artistic outlet in the craft of building. From wielding power tools for the first time to teaching carpentry at Humber College, Pia’s story is one of transformation, artistry, and advocacy.

“The spaces we enter won't diminish our stories and our light just because they're not historically built for us.” – Sophia Malbarosa

As a Filipina woman navigating male-dominated trade spaces, Pia reflects on micro-aggressions, cultural identity, and the importance of showing up authentically. Her classroom philosophy is grounded in empathy and inclusivity—where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to bring their whole selves into the trades.

We also explore her art installation Weaving Waves, a multidisciplinary piece that integrates textiles, steel, and video projections to explore cultural storytelling and community. Whether she’s building a set or mentoring a student, Pia proves that creativity is a powerful bridge between disciplines—and a catalyst for change.
