Stephanie Hogewoning on Avionics, Antarctica, and Aviation Legacy

Take a break, we’re on Smoko. In this episode, we’re joined by Stephanie Hogewoning, Academic Chair of the School of Transportation at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). From growing up in a family of pilots to leading the next generation of aviation technicians, Stephanie’s story is one of discovery, resilience, and full-circle moments.

Stephanie’s journey into aviation began somewhat unexpectedly. Although she was raised around planes, her initial interest was minimal—until a sensory memory at the airport reignited her passion. Facing academic challenges in high school, Stephanie’s father encouraged her to consider aviation. That encouragement led her to enroll in SAIT’s avionics technology program, a decision that proved to be transformative.

“The smell of jet fuel always reminds me of my dad and the aviation legacy he inspired in me.” – Stephanie Hogewoning

After graduating, Stephanie launched her career as an installation technician, taking her to extraordinary places—including Antarctica. As part of the British Antarctic Survey, she became the only avionics specialist on the entire continent. Stephanie shares what it was like working in extreme conditions, navigating high-stakes responsibilities, and witnessing the unmatched beauty of the polar landscape.

Returning to SAIT as an instructor, Stephanie now shapes the future of aviation by mentoring students and sharing the wealth of knowledge she’s gained in the field. She emphasizes the role of mentorship, community, and perseverance in overcoming industry barriers and finding success in male-dominated spaces.

This episode is an inspiring deep dive into what it means to find your calling, break boundaries, and pass on the spark to the next generation.
