Pioneering Space Research: Makenna Kuzyk & Jana Gabera's Mission SpaceWalker

In this episode of the Smoko Podcast, we explore the journey of Makenna Kuzyk and Jana Gabera, mechanical engineering students at the University of Alberta and co-founders of Mission SpaceWalker. This all-women and gender-diverse student group is dedicated to advancing space research and promoting diversity in the aerospace industry.

Makenna and Jana share their experiences leading Mission SpaceWalker, from conducting electroadhesive robotics experiments during parabolic flights as part of the Canadian Reduced Gravity Experiment Challenge (CAN-RGX) to participating in glacial analog missions on the Athabasca Glacier. Their work not only contributes to space exploration but also serves as an inspiration for underrepresented groups in STEM.

Throughout the conversation, they discuss the challenges and triumphs of founding a research team, the importance of mentorship, and their commitment to creating inclusive opportunities in space science. Their story is a testament to the impact of student-led initiatives in shaping the future of aerospace research.

“I saw a girl in a spacesuit and thought, that's what I want to do.”
– Makenna Kuzyk
