Shayla Aspen: The Tiny Technician on Gas Fitting & Leading as a Tradeswoman
Take a break, we’re on Smoko. This week, we’re joined by Shayla Aspen—better known as The Tiny Technician—for an insightful look into her inspiring career as a certified gas heating specialist and founder of her own company, Tiny Technician Ltd.
Shayla’s journey began in the business world, but it wasn’t long before she realized her true calling was in the trades. After discovering the Women in Trades program at Camosun College, she shifted paths and dove into plumbing and pipe fitting, eventually specializing in residential gas systems including fireplaces, furnaces, and tankless water heaters.
"I thrive on proving that I can succeed in spaces where I wasn’t expected to." – Shayla Aspen
Now a certified gas fitter and one of the few women in the field to run her own company, Shayla shares her experiences navigating the male-dominated industry—from working with propane systems on remote islands to speaking at natural gas conventions. Her passion, precision, and resilience have helped her earn a reputation as both a skilled technician and a community advocate.
The episode explores the value of representation, mentorship, and leadership in trades. Shayla highlights the importance of building a healthy workplace culture, especially in a woman-owned business, and discusses strategies for combating stereotypes while balancing self-care with entrepreneurship.
