Rosa & Mathilde of SAGE: Student Leadership in Environmental Science

Take a break, we’re on Smoko. This week we’re joined by Rosa Fragomeni and Mathilde Tremblay, co-presidents of the Student Association for Geography, Geomatics, and the Environment (SAGE), to explore youth leadership, environmental science, and community building in action.

Mathilde shares her hands-on fieldwork in environmental restoration, studying nutrient levels in reclaimed gravel pits across Southern Ontario. Her journey is one of curiosity, precision, and balancing scientific research with student leadership. Rosa discusses her passion for environmental entrepreneurship—where innovation meets climate action—and her belief in bridging research and business to build a sustainable future.

“Every environmental choice we make shapes the future. I realized I wanted to be part of those choices.” – Rosa Fragomeni

Together, they reflect on leading SAGE, launching initiatives like the Unite Behind the Science journal club, and growing a student-led community that champions sustainability and interdisciplinary collaboration. From organizing events to learning the ropes of leadership, they share honest insights into what it means to step up, make mistakes, and make an impact.

This episode is a celebration of grassroots leadership and the transformative power of youth in environmental science. If you’re passionate about sustainability, collaboration, or student-led change, this conversation is packed with purpose and inspiration.
